Who is Eligible?
Practicing Members are persons who have received a four year university degree in kinesiology from a post-secondary educational institution in Canada that is recognized by the Board, or who has educational qualifications deemed by the Board to be equivalent, is employed or practices in British Columbia as a kinesiologist, and meets the continuing education requirements set by the Board.
What are the requirements?
Academic
Practicing Member applicants must meet the following academic requirements to be considered for Practicing Member status:
1) Four year university Bachelor’s Degree in:
• Kinesiology
• Human Kinetics
• Kinanthropology
• Or Equivalent
2) An above satisfactory achievement (C or higher) in comprehensive courses with a primary focus in each of the following four core course areas:
• Human Anatomy
• Human Physiology
• Psychomotor Behavior
• Biomechanics
3) Above satisfactory achievement (C or higher) in 16 other courses in addition to the 4 required core courses:
• The 16 additional courses are considered within 30 areas of study
• These 16 courses must be represented in a minimum of 11 areas of study, with a maximum of 2 courses accepted in any one area of study
• Each course may only be represented once on your application
• Laboratory, tutorial or practicum related courses will not be accepted

Constitution and Bylaws
Practicing Members are required to abide by and uphold the constitution and bylaws of the BCAK.
Continuing Education
Practicing Members are required to agree to meet continuing education requirements as a condition of membership and renewal.
Code of Ethics
Practicing Members are required to sign, and agree and adhere to a Practicing Member Code of Ethics as a condition of membership and renewal.
Errors & Omissions Insurance
Practicing Members are required to carry Errors & Omissions (E&O) insurance as a condition of membership and renewal.
Practicing Members in good standing are eligible to purchase coverage through the BCAK/CKA group insurance provider LMS PROLINK.
- The "Kinesiology group E&O policy" has been specifically designed for Kinesiologists. Download the Policy Application.
- Further information on the Scope of Practice covered by this policy can be obtained from the CKA website or by Contacting the CKA directly.
- Coverage is available with either a $2M or $5M aggregate/per loss limit. Any questions regarding the policy and/or its wording should be directed to the broker LMS PROLINK.
Alternatively members have the option to submit written proof they carry E&O insurance that provides minimum equivalent coverage for the Scope of Practice as defined by the CKA and covers the insured for at least $2M.
- Members requesting exemption must meet the qualifications indicated and submit a fully completed and signed Application for Exemption to the BCAK office prior to the processing of their membership.
Commercial General Liability Insurance
Practicing Members who participate in the BCAK/CKA's group E&O insurance policy have the option of purchasing the BCAK/CKA's Commercial General Liability (CGL) insurance coverage. Membership Dues & Fees
How do I apply?
All prospective Practicing Members are required to fill out and submit all the required documents and information to the BCAK office. Incomplete applications will be returned to the applicants with a note identifying any deficiencies.
Applications with all the required documents and information are reviewed by the BCAK Membership Committee.
The Membership Committee attempts to meet every month to consider applications for membership.
The review process for BC university graduates takes 6-8 weeks from the date the completed application is received at the BCAK office. The review process for graduates of university programs outside of BC but within Canada take 8-10 weeks. The review process for graduates of university programs from outside Canada takes approximately 12-14 weeks.
It is the sole responsibility of the applicant to meet all the requirements of application and membership.
APPROVED Applications for Practicing Membership
Those applicants who are granted Practicing Membership are contacted by e-mail and required to pay the required dues and fees.
New Practicing Members receive a new member information package by mail that includes:
• Welcome Letter
• Membership Payment Receipt
• Official Membership Certificate
• E&O Insurance Certificate (if applicable)
• CGL Insurance Certificate (if applicable)
• Continuing Education – CESP Tracking Form
DENIED Applications for Practicing Membership
Those applicants who are not granted Practicing Membership are contacted by e-mail with an explanation of why the applicant did not meet the requirements to become a Practicing Member.
The BCAK retains application information for those denied Practicing Membership for 2 years, and denied applicants are welcome during this period to submit additional information for reconsideration as it becomes available.
All questions or disputes related to the membership committee's decision must be submitted in writing to the BCAK office to the attention of the membership committee. The applicant will receive a written response from the membership committee within 8 weeks.
Who is Eligible?
Non-Practicing Members are persons who were but are no longer a Practicing Member because of parental or medical leave, and who are not currently employed or practicing in British Columbia as a kinesiologist. Please contact the office for more information on this status.
Student Members are persons who are enrolled in a course of studies leading to a bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree in kinesiology from a post-secondary educational institution in Canada that is recognized by the Board.
Academic Members are persons who are or were employed as a professor, instructor, or member of a faculty of a post-secondary educational institution in Canada that is recognized by the Board, in a faculty or department which offers courses in kinesiology, human kinetics, and related subjects.
Associate members are corporations, associations, organizations, or individuals that support the purposes of the Society.
