Working with the Brain in Mind
Robert Aitken

Participants in this workshop will discuss answers to the following questions:

  • Why are memory and emotions so closely tied together?
  • Why is a person’s EQ (Emotional Intelligence Quotient) 4 times as accurate in predicting the person’s success in life as the IQ (Intelligence Quotient)?
  • How can a person increase his or her emotional intelligence
  • How can we learn in a mindful way, rather than just by memorizing things?
  • What happens to intelligence as we age? How can we, as adults, maintain peak mental ability for as long as we live? How do nutrition, exercise, heredity, stress, friendships, sleeping and dreaming and other factors affect our mental sharpness?
We will examine and demonstrate practical ways in which we can apply the information from brain research to our work and our lives outside of work.

Robert Aitken is with the School of Instructor Education at Vancouver Community College where he teaches in the Provincial Instructor Diploma Program. He has a MEd in Curriculum and Instruction. He is a doctoral candidate in Adult Education. He travels extensively working with faculty in colleges and schools, leaders and trainers in corporations, government and non-profit organizations to help them realize the value of brain research to teaching, working, leading and living. His practical approach and keen sense of humour have made him a popular speaker at national and international conferences.

Seven Strategies for Shoulder Conditioning
Brian Justin, MHK, CEP, CSCS

The shoulder is more like a ball and saucer joint. This gift affords us plenty of range of motion and options for movement. But with options comes responsibility. This workshop will go over 7 strategies you can do as a trainer or kinesiologist to ensure healthy conditioning for your client’s shoulders. As famous functional movement specialist Gary Gray states the shoulder needs mostability! The information from this workshop will be useful whether you work in a gym or clinic situation.

Brian is currently a Kinesiology Instructor at the University of the Fraser Valley in Abbotsford. He earned his Masters and Bachelor degrees from the University of British Columbia. Brian’s areas of concentration are exercise physiology, strength and conditioning, injury management, and exercise testing and prescription.  He is a Certified Exercise Physiologist (CEP) through CSEP. Additionally Brian is an NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, CSEP- Certified Personal Trainer, CHEK Level 1 Practitioner (Corrective Holistic Exercise Kinesiologist) , CHEK Holistic Lifestyle Coach Level 1, Functional Movement Screen Level 1 trainer, and NASM Performance Enhancement Specialist and Corrective Exercise Specialist. Brian’s clientele has ranged from post-rehabilitation to recreational and varsity athletes and everything in between. Besides teaching students and training clients, he currently authors manuals and articles. He has contributed to 4 chapters in Human Kinetics Publisher’s book Foundations of Professional Personal Training and 3 chapters in CSEP’s resource manual for the Certified Personal Trainer. Brian is passionate about spreading the word on the benefits of physical activity for health, performance, and injury prevention.

Webinar: Kins & Delivering Services to ICBC

Date:3/29/2012
Time:12:30 pm - 1:30 pm
Location:Online & 102 - 211 Columbia St., Vancouver
Details:
The rehabilitation work performed for the Insurance Corporation of BC (ICBC) by Kinesiologists is governed by the Insurance (Vehicle) Act and the Regulations contained therein. A strong working knowledge of Part 7 – Accident Benefits can be beneficial when dealing with adjusters, claims managers and the rehabilitation department.

The BCAK is pleased to offer an informative educational session to members that will introduce them to the terms and services defined in Part 7 (Accident Benefits) and help provide a better understanding of the regulations under which ICBC operates and the role that Kinesiologists play in providing services.

The seminar will focus on reviewing those professions that are recognized under the Act and explaining the medical or rehabilitative benefits that are available to claimants under section 88, including how Kinesiology “fits in”, along with the requirements imposed under sections 89 and 90 of the Act dealing with arbitration and ICBC’s power to “terminate benefits for refusal to undergo treatment or training”.

Additionally sections 96 to 99 of the Act will be addressed to enhance Practicing member knowledge of requirements imposed on claimants including the; restrictions of benefits, notice of claim, medical certificates and medical examination.

The presentation will also touch on the topic of “dual responsibility” as it relates to the interaction between the client (claimant) the Kinesiologist (therapist) and ICBC (The insurer/adjuster).
